Study No.3 The Feast of Firstfruits - Lev 23:9-14
HISTORICALLY
It was to be kept upon entrance into Promised Land v10
The first sheaf of (Barley) harvest was to be offered to
the Lord v11
Sacrifice must accompany the sheaf v12, 13
Only then could rest of the harvest be eaten v14
It was first kept in Joshua 5:9-12
Families also brought the 'Firstfruits' of all their
produce to the Lord - Deut 26:1-11
In a revival under King Hezekiah the people brought
their 'Firstfruits' to the Lord 2 Chron 31:5-6
I. FEAST SPEAKS OF - DEDICATION
The Feast Acknowledged:
All we have is God's gift v10a (The LAND)
He must have the FIRST AND BEST v10,14
Our dedication is only acceptable to God through the
sacrifice of Christ the Lamb of God v12
We too should honour the Lord by our 'Firstfruits' Prov
3:9-10 & Matt 6:33
TYPICALLY
II. SAVIOUR AS FIRSTFRUITS - RESURRECTION
1 Cor 15:20,23
Christ rose on the very day the 'Firstfruits' were
offered in the temple. The day after the Sabbath
following Passover Lev 23:11
As the 'Firstfruits' Christ:
Hallowed the harvest which was to follow.
Is the pledge that the rest of the harvest will be
gathered in.
Is the sample of the harvest to come. Phil 3:21
III. SPIRIT AS FIRSTFRUITS - SATISFACTION
Rom 8:23
The Lord commanded that the 'Firstfruits' be given to
the Priest's Num 18:12-13
God has given the Holy Spirit to believers as the
'Firstfruits' of Heaven Eph 1:13-14
IV. SAVED AS FIRSTFRUITS - EVANGELISATION
Rom 16:5
By being 'Firstfruits' believers have:
A great dignity
A great duty - we should have gratitude of heart and
goodliness of life Jer 2:3
We have been saved so that a harvest should follow after
us James 1:18
The Samaritan woman became the 'Firstfruits' of many converts
in her town John 4:29,35
